There’s some exciting news about the Sutter Theater reconstruction project on Plumas Street in Yuba City we’d like to share, including how you can help us leverage an important anonymous contribution from three local families of donors.
First, the Sutter Performing Arts Association would like to extend a grateful “thank you” to our countless and amazing volunteers, supporters, and donors who have worked tirelessly with us these past years to restore the old movie theatre to a performing arts and community center.
It has been challenging to raise funds and awareness of our goals in the midst of an economic downturn — and it has sometimes been difficult to continue on with our construction efforts — but with your help, we persevere. We have made important strides towards fulfilling our promise of creating a versatile venue for performances, art and community events for everyone. We’re very excited about this progress.
In addition to thanking our supporters we’d like to take this opportunity to clarify what we’re about. Our Board of Directors is made up of twelve local volunteers who believe in the value of music, dance, artistic expression, visual arts — anything relating to the arts. We believe that a community is enriched by art: Arts promote discipline, improve academic success, and spark creativity. Our goal is to provide a facility accessible to local citizens for artistic promotion and general use, nonprofit or otherwise.
We are a registered 501(C)3 California nonprofit, the nonprofit owns the building, and our board receives no compensation, either direct or indirect, for hours, services or labor related to the project. This is written into our bylaws. Other than basic insurance and minimal monthly expenses, all profits go directly to renovations, including a percentage of sales generated from The Theater Art Gallery.
In communities across our nation, performing arts theaters drive tourism and support local merchants. Imagine having dinner out then attending a concert right here at home! Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a home for our local symphony and choral groups? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to provide opportunities for local youth to explore the arts? Our plans for the Sutter Theater include a “Black Box” theater (a versatile space for multiple uses), a 299-seat performing arts theater, expanded lobby, reconfigured food café, and art gallery.
We’ve made huge progress inside the building this past year and more good news is on the horizon. The “Black Box” is nearing completion, new rough plumbing is installed and interior demolition is finished. The fire suppression system is approaching completion and new heating units await installation. Work to begin restoring the lobby interior and connecting with the Theater Art Gallery (in its sixth year) is scheduled.
But we need the community’s help to move to the finish line. Three local families have a proposal for us—they have offered to match EVERY DOLLAR DONATED to the Sutter Theater during the first half of 2018, up to a maximum of $80,000! So, every dollar generated by friends and neighbors is now worth $2 and if you will help us accept this challenge, our goal to open a renovated Sutter Theater can be realized THIS YEAR!! These families believe in community, the arts and making our city a better place for all and they wish to remain anonymous. We have their funds set aside waiting for matching donations — and all funds donated in 2018 will go towards this match grant.
Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted. PLEASE consider your tax-deductible gift, whether large or small, as a valuable investment in this project, our town, and our residents —every dollar makes a difference!
