Born in Montana, VERN HILL came to Yuba City in 1948 to visit his aunt Rachel. Two years later, he joined the U.S. Navy for a two-year stint, and then he enrolled in art classes at Yuba College. There he met Phyllis who became his portrait model and wife, a year later. Vern finished his BA degree at San Jose State University and became a Registered Occupational Therapist. In 1966 he and Phyllis came back to the area, moving into the historic Howard House on East Butte Road where they raised four children. After retiring as a State Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for Yuba, Sutter, and Colusa counties, Vern renewed his interest in painting during a trip to Costa Rica, visiting his daughter Julie and her husband Rick. Julie invited him “to come paint with me,” which he did in 2011 and has been painting ever since.
Ceramic artist PAUL SPOTO was born and raised in Yuba City and has lived in Sutter county his entire life. In 2010 he started working with clay, creating his first piece to test a wood stove he built. Throwing on the potter’s wheel came easily to him, and the tactile sensation of working with clay is something he really enjoys. Paul fires most of his work in a kiln using propane, but occasionally he uses a wood kiln. Both propane and wood allow him to create glazes with brilliant colors. He prefers creating functional pieces, so that his ceramics can be used daily. Paul joined The Theater Art Gallery as a resident artist in 2014, and his beautiful ceramic pieces have an earthy yet elegant quality in an array of colors.
The Theater Art Gallery is open every week, Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 pm. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Our friendly staff welcome you and admission is always free. Proceeds from The Theater Art Gallery benefit the Sutter Performing Arts Association’s effort to renovate the Sutter Theater, turning it into a viable community center.
